Telkom Build Bandung Digital Valley, Creative Industry Centre in Indonesia

Bandung, December 20, 2011 – Amid tight business competition in telecommunication and information industry, information and communication technology (ICT) develops more speedily. The speed development of ICT makes digital creative industry grows very fast and PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk. (Telkom) has an interest in giving the support for the industry. One of the efforts Telkom does is to support new innovation through an integrated ecosystem. Said President Director of  Telkom, Rinaldi Firmansyah, in the launching of facility of Bandung Digital Valley (BDV), Tuesday (20/12) at Telkom Research & Development Center (RDC), Bandung.

Further explained by Rinaldi Firmansyah that BDV is an initiative of Telkom in developing the ecosystem and expected to be a starting point to support acceleration of ICT penetration in  Indonesia. “The integrated ecosystem is local industries like appplication developer, content provider and telecommunication instrument industry,” confirmed Rinaldi. Rinaldi explained that utilization of broadband optical fibre as a backbone of ICT infrastructure needs to be optimized by developing various kinds of applications and contents beneficial for the industry and the people, that is why Telkom is concerned to support this industry through ICT ecosystem devekopment in Indonesia.

The term ”ecosystem” stands for ecological system formed by mutual relationship between the living and its environment. The ecosystem may also be said a full and thorough unity among living environment elements influencing with each other.

According to Rinaldi, BDV will bring all technopreneur and technoventura to a cooperation platform mutually beneficial. This cooperation is a form of a long-term investment for sustaining ICT business in Indonesia in which it becomes big business centres in the future. ”Telkom has allocated budget at Rp 50 billions for the next three years to prove our seriousness in developing this program,” explained Rinaldi.

Development of BDV is centralized in Telkom RDC, Bandung. Facility of BDV provided at Gedung Menara RDC 4th floor has an area 1200 m² for 100 people of developer. Other facilities cover demo room/gadget room (room for application or instrument ready for commercial), creative corner (room for working and developing application ), meeting room (room for meeting and discussion), cafe corner (room for leisure and working) and lounge for discussion and transaction .

BDV Becomes Excellent Innovation Ecosystem

BDV is a bridge between technopreneur or developer of application with the market or industry as an absorber or user of the application. BDV positions itself as resources pool and able to be a part or get an access of various applications ready to develop.

Through this program we are sure that to build creative cell in Indonesia will be more stimulating, “With open access to subscribers, application developers, the industry with open innovation, by this BDV,  is expected to connect various creative cells with the existing creative community,” explained Rinaldi. BDV should then be able to be a facility to build networking between developer and fund donor, for instance, ventura capital. BDV alsp provides complete supporting facilities from stage of development, design to commercialization.

As a resources pool, BDV will be supported by various competencies built from the community. Funding aspect for start-up companies will also be supported through this program. In the next three years target to be achieved is 600 SaaS (solution as service) like cloud computing for individual and institution as well, 5.000 application stores such as for android and blackberry and  500 application of solution for company in the form of enterprise solution application. Rinaldi explained that BDV would give education and advocation for all developers, either technical competency or business competency so that each application developer can commercialize his well-planned and efficient innovation result.

BDV long-term target is to stimulate and accelerate ICT self management, particularly applications and contents so that in the future all applications and contents of the majority will be fulfilled by domestic developers. Besides, Indonesia can show its performance achievement of digital creative industry in regional area and worldwide. The short-term target will give advocation  guidance in technical and business aspect in developing solution based on contents and applications beneficial for the people and industry as well. Technical advocation will be given in the form of learning and assistance in making application development, socialization to the trend, make laboratory trial and others.

Meanwhile, business guidance will be given in the form of business learning like market opportunity analysis, model business making, assistance how to sell and others. "Our vision is that BDV will be an excellent innovation ecosystem seen from the aspect of hardware, partnership scheme and modern supporting system. In the next three years, BDV is expected to accompany 600 developers, 60 local companies, 45 universities and 15 global partners", said  Rinaldi.

Other strategic steps are making cooperation with some technology providers in system provision such as Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, SAP. Before, BDV also had made cooperation with developer group like Indigo Venture, Creative Information Community of Indonesia (MIKTI) and universities / Poly-technique, Electrical Alumni Association (IAE) ITB and other application developer community. "We hope BDV will be a pioneer in developing digital creative industry based on integrated ecosystem so that it gives benefit for the progress of  Indonesia",  explained Rinaldi.
